School of Health Professions grows with new leadership
Dr. Jon Williamson was named Dean of UT Southwestern’s School of Health Professions in October, with the goal of further integrating the School of Health Professions with other Medical Center departments and initiatives.
Dr. Williamson will take the lead in “growing the school’s clinical operations, sustaining high-quality educational programs, and expanding research capacity,” said Dr. Greg Fitz, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Dean of the UT Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Fitz holds the Nadine and Tom Craddick Distinguished Chair in Medical Science, and the Atticus James Gill, M.D. Chair in Medical Science.
“That’s exactly what makes this job so attractive, and has me excited about the future of the School,” said Dr. Williamson, who first came to UT Southwestern as a postdoctoral fellow in cardiology in 1992 and joined the faculty in 1995. “Dr. Fitz has expectations for bringing all the health professions in closer alignment with the other departments and thus contributing more to the mission of top-notch clinical care, world-class education, and research that is second to none.”
Dr. Williamson earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, in Fort Worth, in 1992. His research focused on neural control of the circulation, and cortical remapping following injury and rehabilitation. He holds the Stoffel/Centex Professorship in Clinical Care.
The School of Health Professions, which has been operating for more than four decades, comprises programs in physical therapy, clinical nutrition, prosthetics-orthotics, physician assistant studies, rehabilitation counseling, and emergency medicine. Currently, some 350 students are pursuing doctorates, master’s degrees, or certificates through the school.
