General Information

  • The Principal Investigator (PI) must obtain IRB approval for the study protocol in order to schedule phlebotomy services at the Human Genetics Clinical Core Laboratory. An IRB number, account, and requisition number are required to place an order with the phlebotomy team. Account and requisition numbers can be obtained through the study team’s department sdministration.
  • The PI’s study team must obtain written consent from each research subject prior to the blood draw.
  • Phlebotomy services are provided 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday. Services can be provided on-site, McDermott Center NA2.118, along with on-campus and off-campus.
  • Contact our team via phone or email to schedule blood draws at least 48 hours in advance. The time/place of collection, the number of individuals to be drawn, and instructions for blood processing is to be provided by the study team. If personnel are available, it may be possible to collect blood in shorter notice. Email yamei.cheng@utsouthwestern.edu or call 214-648-1311.
  • The Core provides all blood drawing equipment and tubes needed, unless PI’s would like to use their own/different tubes than provided. The Human Genetics Clinical Core carries:
    • 4 mL purple EDTA tops
    • 10 mL purple EDTA tops
    • 8.5 mL yellow ACD tops
    • 5 mL gold SST tops
  • When placing orders, please include the best contact person/contact phone number should any problems arise we are able to get in touch with someone.
  • If a participant does not show for the scheduled appointment, please contact us as soon as possible to cancel the order.
  • You will only be billed for phlebotomy services when there has been a successful blood draw. If we are unable to get blood flow or need to reschedule for any reason, we will cancel your original order and you will have to submit a new order for another date.
  • If a participant claims to be a hard stick, has had an unsuccessful blood draw in the past, or has any special needs, please indicate this in the “Comments/Special Instructions” section on the order.
