Blake Nichols, M.D.
I am a physician-in-training in the division of pediatric critical care medicine with primary research interests in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is a primary morbidity of T1D. Some people with T1D develop DKA regularly despite good glucose control, while others with poor control rarely, if ever, develop DKA. T1D is known to be an inflammatory disease. I seek to discover if the activity of the neutrophil, by way of the NADPH oxidase and granule release of damaging enzymes, plays a role in the propensity for developing DKA.
