A central challenge in tissue engineering is to modulate cell behavior with high precision in space and time. During normal growth and maintenance of tissues, polypeptide factors provide many of the chemical signals that direct cell behavior. We are synthesizing these polypeptides in forms that are switched on with light and using them in an automated system to control tissue growth.
