The DeMartino Lab studies the biochemical mechanisms and the physiologic regulation of intracellular protein degradation. Protein degradation is a pervasive regulatory mechanism that controls nearly every aspect of normal cellular function. Because its central role, protein degradation is key element in determining healthy and diseased states.

Work in the DeMartino Lab ranges from biochemical studies on the cellular machinery that catalyzes intracellular protein degradation to exploration of how dysfunctional protein degradation causes human diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration
