Research is one of the primary missions of UT Southwestern.  The various offices within Research Administration exist to support and promote research conducted by UT Southwestern faculty, staff, and students at our medical center and in our partner hospitals.  We offer pre-award administrative services for grants and research contracts (including clinical trials), advice about regulatory matters, and facilitation of partnerships with entities in the corporate, government and non-profit sectors.  We also provide technical assistance to researchers and study staff to support their responsible stewardship of research resources.  Please visit our homepage frequently for current information about research polices, procedures, and services at UT Southwestern.

Distributed: August 24, 2010

Dear Research Community,

In a press briefing today, August 24, 2010, Dr. Francis Collins, Director of NIH, described the impact of the preliminary injunction prohibiting NIH from funding human embryonic stem cell research under the NIH Guidelines on current and pending grants.    A NIH Guide notice will be issued shortly containing greater detail.

In short:

Current grantees (those who have received their awards already) may continue with their research.  NIH will freeze the funds for the 22 grants due for annual renewal (non-competing renewals) by September 30, 2010.

Grants in the review process (initial peer review or recommended for consideration by the advisory council) will be pulled from further consideration at this time.

NIH consulted with the Department of Justice to make this determination.

As we review the forthcoming NIH Guide notice and obtain additional information we will inform the research community.

Please feel free to contact me directly at x80455 if you should have any questions.

Sincerely,

Suzanne M. Rivera, Ph.D.
Vice President for Research Administration
