When beginning training at UT Southwestern, all postdocs register for this program. The requirements listed below and a total of 15 credit hours are to be fulfilled within two years. Postdocs register for three credit hours in the fall and spring terms and two credit hours in the summer term. Following completion of this program, postdocs are offered a choice among multiple programs of more specialized training.
- Required Courses
- Ethics
The ethics courses for postdocs in the responsible conduct of research include attendance at two or three lectures, written work, on-line tutorials, and a lab group discussion.
- Special Topics in Career Advancement - choose one to meet the requirement, others may be taken as electives
- A Practical Course for Becoming an Independent Investigator
- Information Mastery for Postdoctoral Trainees
- Language course for selected trainees
- Journal Club - There are many journal clubs and works-in-progress (WIP) on campus. Any existing departmental journal club/WIP may meet this requirement with approval of the Postdoctoral Affairs Office. The purpose of a journal club or WIP is to keep abreast of recent research advances in the indicated subject areas, to sharpen critical thinking abilities, and to develop public speaking skills.
- Supervised Research - Supervised Research consists of the training you get from your mentor in the laboratory every day and, as such, requires no class attendance. Therefore there is no “class” schedule. When your research schedule will not allow you to be out of the lab, you should register only for Supervised Research.
- Electives - Elective courses are offered to enhance your training experience, but are not required. As space is usually limited, please register for these courses only if your schedule allows for full participation.
- Application for Funding Award - Write and submit a competitive fellowship or grant application. Proof of submission must be presented to the Postdoctoral Affairs Office of the graduate school.
- Research Mentoring - Serve as the supervisor for research project conducted by a rotating graduate student, STARS student or teacher, SURF student, Green Fellow or other trainee. Name of trainee and program shall be reported to the Postdoctoral Affairs Office.
- Science Outreach - Serve in the STARS Science Outreach program or other outreach effort you identify and have approved by the Postdoctoral Affairs Office, such as science fair judging.
- Journal Club/Wipes - Participate in Journal Club or Works-in-Progress in addition to the one term requirement B. above.
- Advanced Topics-Off Campus - Attend workshops or conferences of your choice in advanced topics offered off campus. Advance permission is required from your mentor and the Postdoctoral Affairs Office. Costs associated with such courses are not provided by the graduate school.
- Attend Effective Teachers Series.
- Participate in advanced graduate course(s) from the Division of Biological Sciences class offerings.
