Graduate Students in the News

Andrew Williams, working in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Olson, co-authored an article in the December 11th issue of Science entitled “MicroRNA-206 Delays ALS Progression and Promotes Regeneration of Neuromuscular Synapses in Mice.”  Andrew recently completed his Ph.D. in Genetics and Development and co-authored this study with researchers from Harvard University.  Read more

Cagatay The cover of the October 30th issue of Cell featured an article by lead author Dr. Tolga Cagatay, Instructor of Pharmacology, and senior author Dr. Gurol Suel, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology.  The article is entitled “Architecture-Dependent Noise Discriminates Functionally Analogous Differentiation Circuits.”  Read more

Postdoctoral Scholars in the News

In a study available online December 1st and scheduled to appear in the January issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Dr. Shinako Araki, co-lead author and postdoctoral scholar working in the laboratory of Dr. David Boothman in the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, identified a possible therapy target for aggressive cancer. Alumni in the News

Dara Burdette

Dr. Dara Burdette recently helped Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman test a myth for the Discovery Channel show, Mythbusters.  She earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology in 2009 working with Dr. Kim Orth.  Dr. Burdette is currently a postdoctoral fellow at UC – Berkeley in Dr. Russell Vance’s lab.  The Vance lab has previously helped the Mythbusters with microbiological tests.

Dr. Ying Chen, who earned her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology in 2008, was one of the researchers who discovered the action of a small protein that is a major villain in Alzheimer’s disease can be counterbalanced with another brain protein.  The findings, available online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest a promising new tactic against the devastating illness.  The work was a collaboration between Drs.
