General Requirements for Applicants to Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Science

Division of Basic Science (DBS)

Stipend: All students enrolled in the Division of Basic Science receive a nationally competitive stipend throughout the course of their Ph.D.  studies.  Our stipend is currently $24,000 per year.  Additional funds provided to the student cover the full cost of tuition, a comprehensive health insurance package and student service fees.

Stipend support during the first year of graduate school is provided by the DBS, rather than individual faculty mentors. This allows students to choose freely among the programs and participating faculty mentors. In subsequent years, students receive stipend support from research grants of their dissertation mentors, or from one of the institutional NIH training grants associated with various areas of research training.

For organic chemists a competitive Welch Foundation/UT Southwestern Graduate Fellowship is available at $32,000 per year.

Application Process: Prospective Ph.D. students apply on-line to the Division of Basic Science rather than the individual graduate programs.  A complete application includes successful completion of the on-line application, transcripts from all post-high school institutions attended, general GRE exam scores, TOEFL exam scores (if you are an international applicant) and three letters of recommendation.

Applicants must have, or be in the process of completing, a bachelor's degree.  While there are no specific course requirements for admissions, experience has shown that undergraduates benefit from having completed upper level courses in biochemistry, genetics and cell or molecular biology.  We have no minimum GPA or GRE but our average incoming student for fall 2006 has a GPA of 3.45 and a GRE of ~1250.  Research experience, gained in a summer program as a student researcher or as a post undergraduate, is a critical aspect of the evaluation process.

Exceptionally well prepared students can apply for admissions with advanced standing.
