Biography
Dr. Nima Sharifi received his B.S. (summa cum laude) in Biology in 1995 from Virginia Tech. He received an Intramural Research Training Award for a fellowship at the Unit on Molecular Genetics, National Institutes of Health, in 1995-1996 with Dr. Miles Brennan and Dr. Ute Hochgeschwender. In medical school, he was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship to work in the laboratory of Dr. George Stark at the Cleveland Clinic (1998-1999) and returned to finish his M.D. degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 2001. Dr. Sharifi completed his internship and residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital through the American Board of Internal Medicine Research Pathway in 2003. This was followed by medical oncology and postdoctoral fellowships at the National Cancer Institute (2003-2008), where he was focused on the clinical problem of resistance to hormonal therapy in advanced prostate cancer and the fundamental molecular mechanisms that mediate this cancer phenotype that is ultimately lethal. Dr. Sharifi joined the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UT Southwestern as an Assistant Professor in 2008. He has a focused clinic that is solely dedicated to the care of men with prostate cancer and has a laboratory that investigates molecular and metabolic mechanisms of androgen receptor (AR) gain-of-function that lead to resistance to hormonal therapies. The overall goal of his research program is to identify the fundamental mechanisms of advanced prostate cancer and utilize this knowledge to develop better treatments for men with this disease. Recently published work from his laboratory has demonstrated that the synthesis of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) unexpectedly bypasses testosterone to drive resistant tumors (Chang, et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 2011 Aug 16;108(33)13728-33), altering the consequences of potential pharmacologic targets (more information available on laboratory website). Dr. Sharifi has received the Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award (2008), the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Physician-Scientist Early Career Award (2009) and the American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award (2012). When away from work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons.
