Dr. Foglia received a BS in Biology from Georgetown University in 1970, and graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University Medical School in 1974 where he also was elected to AOA. He received his general surgical training at UCLA, as a junior resident from 1974-1976. From 1976-1978 he was a research surgeon in the Cardiovascular Surgical Research Laboratory, and returned to general surgical training from 1978-1981 concluding as a Chief Resident. His pediatric surgical training was in Washington, D.C. at the Children's Medical Center where he was Chief Resident from 1981 to 1983. His first academic faculty position was at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1983 to 1986. He was awarded a NCI Clinical Investigator Award for work in transplantation biology. He moved in 1986 to UCLA, continued his previous research, and started the ECMO Program there with the development of both a clinical and a research program. In 1990 he was recruited to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis to be the Division Chief in Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon in Chief at the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Over the next sixteen years, he served as Medical Director of the Burn and Trauma Program, opened an RRC approved training program in Pediatric Surgery, increased the clinical volume of the service significantly, and was fortunate to have recruited three of seven faculty members who subsequently became Division Chiefs at prominent pediatric surgical programs in North America. He is coeditor of one of the major textbooks of pediatric surgery and research interests include pediatric trauma, wound healing, and neonatal surgery. In 2006, he was recruited to UT Southwestern, appointed Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon in Chief of the Dallas Children's Medical Center.
