Biography

Sergio Huerta M.D., F.A.C.S. immigrated to the United States in 1985. After obtaining an A.A. in biology from West Los Angeles College, he earned a B.S. also in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. He continued on as a medical student at the UCLA School of Medicine, earning his M.D. with thesis on June 15, 1998. During medical school, he co-wrote a review text for the United States Medical Licensure Exam Step II (Classical Presentations and a rapid review for the USMLE II, J&S publications 1999) and a review book for medical students on surgery (the Pocket Review of Surgery, J&S publications 2000). He completed his surgical residency at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. After completing two years of surgical training, he embarked on a two year hiatus to engage in research in the fields of clinical nutrition and nutritional oncology. During this period, he wrote and published numerous articles in the fields of surgery, oncology and nutrition. He teaches medical students and participates in the continuing medical education program discussing pharmacological and surgical management of obesity. He was the inaugural chairman of an annual scientific forum for residents interested in research, which he chaired from 2000-2005. He also became the founder and director of a clinic specializing in the management and treatment of obesity in indigent patients at the Venice Family Clinic in Venice, California, the largest free clinic in the nation. Dr. Huerta completed his residency in general surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in June 2005 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the editorial board of two medical journals.
