Biography

Dr. Welch’s academic endeavors are based in the UT Southwestern Microvascular Laboratory where he serves as director and instructs residents in approaches to the skull base and microvascular technique. UT Southwestern is benefiting from Dr. Welch’s collaborations with the Utrecht Medical Center in Utrecht, The Netherlands, by making our medical center one of only three sites in the U.S. for the use of a revolutionary laser technique for cerebrovascular bypass, that began in May of 2008. He is active nationally and internationally in the advancement of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery as a field. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Welch received educational degrees from Morehouse College and Howard University College of Medicine, where he pursued his interests in the sciences, world literature and Spanish culture. He completed his general neurosurgical training at the George Washington University Medical Center (Washington, D.C.) where he gained significant experience in skull base techniques under the tutelage of Dr Laligam Sekhar. He then completed fellowship training in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery at UT Southwestern. He continues to contribute as an author to texts on the subject of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. Dr. Welch is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Heart Association (Stroke Section), and the Society for Neurointerventional Surgery. He maintains fluency in Spanish and is an avid cyclist.
