Biography

Educated in both dentistry (Northwestern University) and medicine (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Dr. Tiwana completed in residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and internship in General Surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. While at UNC he also earned a masters degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Subsequently, he completed fellowship training in Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery in Washington, D. C. He was appointed to the full-time teaching staff of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry with joint appointments in the School of Medicine in the Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics, where he practiced from 2004 to 2010. He was also the Chief of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during this time. In 2010 he was recruited to become the graduate program director of the residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Tiwana is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He serves on multiple national committees which are educationally focused on the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Tiwana is frequently called upon for lecturing to professional groups regionally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, as a published author he has contributed numerous journal articles and book chapters to the professional scientific literature. Dr. Tiwana’s clinical practice is through The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center University Hospitals and Faculty Clinic. He is also very actively involved in the craniofacial team at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Dr. Tiwana’s investigative and clinical efforts are focused primarily on infants, children, and young adults affected by: dento-facial deformities/orthognathic surgery, craniofacial sybndromes, craniosynostosis, cleft lip and palate, and craniomaxillofacial trauma. He also maintains an active outpatient oral surgery faculty practice.
