Biography

Robert W. Bucholz, M.D., is currently Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He received his B.A. in Economics at Yale University in 1969. He then attended Yale University School of Medicine where he gradated in 1973. He completed a year-long general surgery internship at the University of Colorado and then completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1977. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1978 and subsequently recertified in 1984 and 1994. Dr. Bucholz was appointed to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern in 1977. In 1982, he completed a six-month orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Nuffield Orthopaedic Center and John Radcliffe II Hospital in Oxford, England. He was promoted to Chairman of the department in 1989. In 2004, he served as President of the 30,000 member American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Along with his clinical and surgical responsibilities, he is currently very active in resident and medical student education. Dr. Bucholz also is involved in several national and state orthopaedic associations. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the Academic Orthopaedic Society, as well as the Texas Orthopaedic Association. He sat on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1997-2002. He also was a member of the Orthopaedic Residency Review Committee of the ACGME from 1996-2002. In 2002, Dr. Bucholz was nominated to the Presidential Line of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is currently serving as President. Dr. Bucholz is married to Marybeth Ezaki, M.D., and they have three daughters.
