 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that afflicts several organs in the body, including the skin. Because the pathogenesis of cutaneous lupus erythematosus is not fully elucidated, using a mouse model that mimics cutaneous lupus erythematosus in humans would be essential to furthering the knowledge base of this disease. I will be investigating the MRL/lpr mouse model and devising other mouse models involving autoantibodies. From these models, we hope to elucidate the relative contributions of genetics and the presence of autoantibodies to the pathogenesis of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. In addition, I will be investigating various signaling pathways from skin biopsies obtained from patients with different forms of cutaneous lupus erythematosus, including acute lupus erythematosus, subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus erythematosus. I will be actively recruiting patients who will be interested in participating in this study. Such pathways could present novel targets for therapeutics to be designed in the future for cutaneous lupus.
