 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Dr. Brandon’s area of research focuses upon the treatment of perinatal women for psychiatric disorders and the ethical challenges of conducting such clinical investigations. Currently, she is the principal investigator of two funded studies. Dr. Brandon is currently recruiting pregnant and postpartum women experiencing depression for participation in an open-series trial, Partner-Assisted Therapy (PAT)for Depression During Pregnancy, (funded by Grant Number: 1K23MH085007-02, Mentored Patient-Oriented Career Development Award (K23)). Partner-Assisted Therapy (PAT)is a time-limited psychotherapeutic antidepressant therapy for pregnant women which includes spouse or partner in the treatment plan. In addition to ameliorating depressive symptoms, PAT is expected to improve the relationship of expectant couples and reduce the risk of postpartum depression. The second investigation, "Survey of Investigator Ethics Practices in Perinatal Mental Health Treatment Research," is the first phase of a future multi-site trial examining the ethical challenges that must be addressed in the conduct of perinatal clinical trials, and the development of a set of collaborative guidelines to aid perinatal investigators and IRBs in balancing the risks and benefits of treatment with perinatal women when designing and approving research protocols.
