 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Our group performs research on the genetics of the Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA), their distribution in different ethnic groups and the description and nucleotide sequencing of novel alleles found in isolated populations. We also study the MICA and MICB antigens encoded in the human Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). These recently described molecules are of interest because of their polymorphism and predominant expression in endothelial cells, monocytes, fibroblasts and epithelial cells including keratinocytes. The possible role of MICA antigens in predisposition to certain diseases and their capacity to induce the production of alloantibodies and possibly serve as targets for graft rejection are being investigated.

 RESEARCH INTERESTS

Major and Minor Histocompatibility Antigens
Autoimmunity and histocompatibility antigens
Molecular methods for histocompatibility testing
Anthropological studies of HLA antigens
Immunology of allograft rejection
