 RESEARCH OVERVIEW

My research interests have centered around Clinical Virology, the epidemiology of infectious diseases, antiviral chemotherapy and healthcare associated infections. Specifically, I have been interested in St. Louis encephalitis, its clinical manifestations and its epidemiology, the epidemiology of histoplasmosis, the chemotherapy of herpes virus infections, particularly herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus, the potential role of interferon in the treatment of St. Louis encephalitis and the epidemiology of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in hospitals. We have investigated an epidemic of necrotizing enterocolitis and have isolated a coronavirus from the stools of infants involved in the epidemic. That isolate is presently being prepared as a virus stock and will eventually be submitted to the ATCC.
