For most new imaging modalities, the idea of a general reconstruction algorithm as found with classical computed tomography (CT) is often not feasible. There are fundamental mathematical difficulties with relating the measured data to the parameters of interests. If, however, some refinement of the imaging task can be performed, then it may be possible to restore the feasibility of the approach. My research involves the development of specific imaging methods that address specific questions of biological relevance. There methods include: detection and characterization of breast microcalcification morphology, application of advanced algorithms for the inverse source problem to the task of measuring tumor volume, and the measurement of elasticity in anisotropic bone using reflected and transmitted waves. This multi-disciplinary approach includes methods from physics, applied mathematics, signal processing, and statistical decision theory.
