My research interests over the last decade have shifted from laboratory investigation and animal models of inflammatory skin disease to clinical investigation and to mentoring of young faculty members. This work includes development of a Pigmented Lesion Clinic for patients at risk for the development of malignant melanoma. In addition to caring for patients, we are working on scanning and computer-based technology that scans pigmented lesions several times over months and years and then through subtraction techniques identifies changes that signify radial growth, which typifies melanoma. I am also collaborating in studies that characterize localized scleroderma (morphea). Finally, I am engaged in a five-year term (2007 - 2012) as Editor-in-Chief of the major science journal for skin biology, the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
