Dr. Flores is Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health, Director of General Pediatrics, the Judith and Charles Ginsburg Chair in Pediatrics, and the Director of the Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. He founded and is the former Co-Director of the Pediatric Latino Clinic at Boston Medical Center. He is a former Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar and a former Robert Wood Johnson Minority Medical Faculty Scholar. He has published over 90 articles and book chapters on a variety of topics, including ’Errors in medical interpretation and their potential clinical consequences in pediatric encounters (Pediatrics 2003;111:6-14.), ’The health of Latino children: Urgent priorities, unanswered questions, and a research agenda. (JAMA 2002;288:82-90), and articles in The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, and Medical Care.
Dr. Flores has given many invited talks nationally and internationally on racial/ethnic disparities in health and healthcare, Latino children’s health, access to healthcare, and culture and clinical care. He was the co-founder and for five years the co-director of the Special Interest Group on Culture, Ethnicity, and Health Care of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. He is on the editorial boards of Ambulatory Pediatrics and the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. He recently testified in the United States Senate on Latino health and the Hispanic Health Improvement Act, and provided a Congressional Briefing on his work on uninsured children. He was an invited speaker at the 2007 National Summit on America’s Children, convened by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and co-chaired by Congressional Representatives DeLauro, Miller, and Fattah. In 2007, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission appointed him to be a member of the Frew Advisory Committee, tasked with helping the agency determine how to use new funding to enhance access to healthcare for children with Medicaid coverage.
Dr. Flores chaired the Latino Consortium of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center for Child Health Research, and is a member of the Committee on Pediatric Research of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program. He has served as a consultant and national advisory committee member for the American Medical Association, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Council of La Raza, and the Sesame Street Workshop. He received the 2006 American Academy of Pediatrics Outstanding Achievement Award in the Application of Epidemiologic Information to Child Health Advocacy. He was a member of the Health Care Research Training Study Section of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) from 1998-2003. Dr. Flores is a practicing pediatrician who has cared for under-served children for 14 years.
Dr. Flores has received research funding from 10 federal agencies and foundations, including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Office of Minority Health, the Maternal Child Health Bureau, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Commonwealth Fund. Dr. Flores’ current research includes a randomized trial of the effectiveness of parent mentors in improving childhood asthma outcomes (supported by the Commonwealth Fund and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), and a randomized trial of a culturally appropriate weight loss intervention for overweight Latino children.
