Dr. DeHaven has been involved in building community-oriented research capacity for more than a decade, and since 1994 has been developing a comprehensive model of community medicine investigating how faith-based organizations contribute to improving the health of vulnerable populations. He is active in community-based participatory research initiatives, and is principal investigator of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) Community Based Participatory Research Project titled, "Project Access: Caring for the Uninsured." He is co-investigator of "Community Leadership in Preventing (CLIP) Asthma," and principal investigator on a national evaluation study, "Health Programs in Faith-Based Organizations: Are they Effective?" Dr. DeHaven is also principal investigator and program director of the Community Health Fellows Program, a collaborative research program for medical students with community health, social service, and faith-based organizations based at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
