H. Dwight Cavanagh was educated at MIT, Johns Hopkins (B.A. 1962, M.D. 1965) and Harvard (Ph.D. 1972, Biology) where his thesis preceptor was Professor George Wald (Nobel laureate, 1967, Medicine-Biology). He completed his clinical residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute under Professor A.E. Maumenee and fellowship training in corneal surgery with Professor Claes Dohlman at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He served on the full-time academic medical faculty of Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Emory University (F. Phinizy Calhoun, Sr., Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology, 1978-1987), Georgetown University, and is currently the W. Maxwell Thomas Chair, Professor and Vice-Chairperson of Ophthalmology. Dr. Cavanagh has also served as a past president of Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO) and the Castroviejo Corneal Society (CCS), executive director of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and as a member (chair) of the Visual Sciences A and Neurosciences and Biobehavioral Sciences Study Sections of the National Institutes of Health. He is the recipient of Honor Recognition Awards from CLAO, CCS, ARVO, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was recently awarded an honorary fellowship by the American Academy of Optometry (2001);he has also been listed in the Best Doctors in the U.S. since 1979. Dr. Cavanagh served a six-year term as Editor-in Chief of the journal Cornea (1989-1995). He currently serves as Editor-in Chief of the Eye and Contact Lens Journal. He has a longstanding interest in corneal surgery and related research.
