Alison Leston, M.D., Ph.D., is part of the General Neurology team at UT Southwestern as well as a liaison to the UT Southwestern Clinically Associated Physicians (UTSCAP). Previously, she was in private practice in St. Louis, MO, and also maintained a faculty appointment at Washington University.

Dr. Leston, Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurotherapeutics, attended medical school and trained in neurology at Washington University in St. Louis followed by a fellowship there in neurophysiology with a focus on EMG.

As a clinician, Dr. Leston enjoys patients who have not previously seen a neurologist.

“It is particularly satisfying to see patients at an early stage of an illness, when intervening can have a major impact,” said Dr. Leston.

Dr. Leston will be neurology’s liaison to UTSCAP, the network of primary care doctors in the community that are affiliated with UT Southwestern.

“I will work with the group on how our department can better serve the community,” she said. “I can help physicians and patients who are used to small private practices navigate their way to obtaining care at UT Southwestern.”

Before entering medical school, Dr. Leston earned a Ph.D. in neurobiology from the University of Chicago.

While she was studying for her Ph.D., Dr. Leston learned about UT Southwestern’s strong roots in the neurosciences.

“I was reading papers by Tom Sudhof who just recently won the Nobel Prize for his work at UT Southwestern, so I had great respect for the neuroscience being done here.”

Besides her work in the clinic, Dr. Leston is looking forward to being part of an academic center again.

“I am excited to be part of a place where I work with great sub-specialty colleagues and make use of all the academic resources here such as Grand Rounds.”
