Meet the Chief
Joseph Forbess, M.D., Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Forbess’ clinical interests include congenital heart disease, congenital heart surgery, hypoplastic left heart, Norwood procedure, and the pediatric heart.
His research interests include:
- Hypoxic-ischemic neurologic injury in piglets undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass, selective cerebral perfusion, and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest
- Minimally invasive approaches to congenital heart surgery
- Quality improvement in congenital heart surgery
- Validation of somatic and cerebral near infrared spectroscopy during cardiopulmonary bypass in pediatric patients
Dr. Forbess graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1990. He completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center and was Chief Resident in General Surgery from 1996 to 1997.
Dr. Forbess held a fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery Research at Duke from 1992 to 1994 and a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery from 1997 to 1999. Among his honors are the Meritorius Service Award and Top Pediatric Specialist.
