UT Southwestern Medical Center contains nearly 11 million square feet of space—hospitals, laboratories, research facilities, classrooms, offices, and associated support facilities—with another 1.8 million square feet under construction and in design.
The UT Southwestern Library serves the entire medical center, including the hospitals. The Library is an excellent resource for students, faculty, and staff, offering access to:
- More than 18,000 full-text electronic journals
- More than 117,000 books, both print and electronic
- More than 264,000 print journal volumes
- Extended hours (nearly 70 hours/week; 24/7 via student badge entry)
- A multitude of private or group study rooms (available 24/7)
The main library (nearly 65,000 square feet) is located in the middle of the South Campus, with a small branch (4,750 square feet) located on the North Campus.
Academic facilities include the technologically advanced SimCenter, a small group teaching center where students can learn and practice skills in a safe, realistic clinical environment. Students have the opportunity to put into practice their medical knowledge, patient care, communication skills, professionalism, and leadership skills on high-fidelity simulators using carefully constructed scenarios.
Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery
Also available is the hands-on UT Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Here, students in their Surgery rotations and electives learn and practice surgical skills, such as knot tying, suturing, and video-endoscopic techniques.
Clinical Skills Clinic
Here, students learn patient interviewing and examination skills by interacting with standardized, trained "patients" while being digitally recorded. The interaction can be reviewed later by the students themselves, as well as by their Academic College mentor.
