Target Audience

The course is designed for practicing otolaryngologists, residents and fellows in training, and other health care providers interested in a comprehensive update on advances in medical and surgical care of rhinologic disease.

Purpose

Describe current treatment strategies for sinonasal diseases with an emphasis upon comprehensive evaluation and medical treatment as well as minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgical techniques.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies and:

    • Review the endoscopic and radiographic anatomy of the paranasal sinuses
    • Outline the key definitions, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and diagnostic criteria for chronic rhinosinusitis
    • Discuss the salient medical management strategies for chronic rhinosinusitis, including antibiotics, antifungals, steroids, and novel topical therapies
    • Delineate a rational evaluation and management approach to FESS failures
    • Comprehend the diagnostic and management algorithm for fungal rhinosinusitis
    • Present key concepts in diagnosis and management of allergic rhinitis
    • Review the basic FESS principles, including preoperative and postoperative considerations to optimize outcomes
    • Assess the decision making and key techniques in frontal sinus surgery
    • Review advanced endoscopic surgical techniques for management of epistaxis, Graves orbitopathy, and CSF rhinorrhea
    • Recognize the evolving surgical paradigm for management of sinonasal and skull base neoplasms
    • Review role of emerging technologies in rhinology
    • Discuss practice management issues in rhinology

Lab Objectives

    • Review key surgical principles of FESS schema
    • Practice endoscopic techniques of maxillary antrostomy, ethmoidectomy,and frontal sinusotomy
    • Perform approaches to the sphenoid sinus, including transnasal and transethmoid approaches
    • Review and perform steps to advanced endoscopic techniques, including sphenopalatine artery ligation, dacryocystorhinostomy, and orbital decompression
    • Integrate use of surgical navigation and intraoperative CT in the operative suite
    • Perform lateral canthotomy and cantholysis
