UT Southwestern University Hospitals

UT Southwestern Medical Center’s St. Paul Building operates 300 staffed beds with specialties in Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Orthopaedics.

The Zale Lipshy building has 151-staffed beds and is home to one of the world’s premier neurological treatment centers. The Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern treats patients with emphasis on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Two junior residents and chief resident are assigned to this rotation on a full-time basis every five weeks. The experience at this hospital provides the residents with diverse involvement and multiple plastic surgery problems including facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty, aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, body contouring, burn reconstruction, nasal reconstruction, microsurgery, hand surgery and difficult wound management. The rotating resident directly assists faculty members in the operative and postoperative care of these patients providing an excellent introduction to basic plastic surgery principles and problems.

Parkland Health and Hospital System

Parkland Memorial Hospital is a primary teaching hospital and offers an excellent grade of responsibility for resident education. Parkland is a 1,000 bed outpatient department with more than 330,000 patient visits and a very active emergency room (more than 122,000 patients per year) and carries a designation of a level-1 trauma center.

The Parkland experience is invaluable to resident education. It provides broad involvement in hand and microsurgery, craniofacial and lower extremity trauma, breast reconstruction, breast reduction, as well as other difficult reconstructive problems. The chief resident may also perform cosmetic surgeries while he/she is at Parkland. The Parkland rotation is a resident-responsible service providing autonomy with active daily faculty participation in the operating room and clinics.

The course of American history changed at Parkland Memorial Hospital. In the turbulent hours following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the world learned of the hospital’s mission - service to all from the very famous to the very poor. The concept that the care of patients is paramount and that it should be of the highest quality possible, no matter who the patient may be, is the cornerstone of a relationship between UT Southwestern and Parkland.

In any given year, there are nearly 160,000 emergency room visits and more than 340,000 people seen in clinics. The 1,000-bed hospital has gained international acclaim as a Level I trauma center. The emergency room is staffed by a faculty member at all times. The plastic surgery service is on call for a large volume of maxillofacial fractures, hand and soft-tissue traumas.

The Simmons Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is the first new facility in 20 years on Parkland’s main campus. The two-story center houses six surgical and four endoscopic suites, as well as a pain center, physician offices and preparatory and recovery rooms.

There are four outpatient clinics (3 Monday and 1 Thursday) scheduled at Parkland each week. The Monday morning clinic is primarily a hand/microsurgery clinic and is staffed by plastic surgeon attendings and is held in conjunction with a weekly Monday morning hand conference led by plastic surgery faculty members.

There are two Monday afternoon clinics – the reconstructive clinic is coordinated and led by the junior plastic surgery resident with the assistance of plastic surgery physician assistants (PA’s), designated clinical registered nurses (RN), and several integrated plastic surgery residents in their PGY 1, 2 or 3 year. The other Monday afternoon clinic is a chief resident cosmetic clinic, which affords an excellent exposure to a wide range of aesthetic patients. Faculty and a clinic coordinator work with the chief resident to assist. The Thursday clinic is a general plastic surgery clinic with a large volume of patients seen. An extremely large diversity of reconstructive cases may be seen in the clinic, including breast reduction, breast reconstruction, burn reconstruction, management of scars and difficult wounds.

Our service maintains an average daily census of approximately 10 plastic surgery patients. One chief resident and one junior resident are assigned to Parkland at all times on a rotating basis. Additionally, junior-level integrated plastic surgery residents and general surgery rotators from UT Southwestern Medical School are also assigned to this service on a rotating monthly basis. Multiple medical students and other individuals from across the country and world are also assigned to this service.

Children's Medical Center

Children’s Medical Center of Dallas is the principal teaching and referring hospital for pediatric patients and is immediately adjacent to Parkland. A plastic surgery resident is assigned to Children’s on a full-time basis five weeks at the junior level and five weeks as a senior.

There is a large volume and broad range of congenital anomalies seen with significant emphasis on ear reconstruction, cleft lip and palate, and craniofacial surgery. Wednesday afternoon craniofacial clinics are conducted by the pediatric plastic surgery service with participation by the neurosurgical and oral and maxillofacial surgery services. There are Monday, Tuesday and Friday pediatric plastic surgery clinics which include cleft lip/palate patients as well as bi-monthly vascular anomaly clinics. The congenital hand clinic is held every Tuesday afternoon as well as a trauma/ hand clinic every Friday afternoon. The pediatric outpatient clinics are conducted by a resident, assisted by a craniofacial fellow and faculty members who are in attendance at these clinics for initial patient contact and long-term follow-up. There are occasional minor surgical procedures conducted in the clinic although they are held to a minimum because of the very large volume of patients seen in this setting.

The LEAP Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing and enriching the lives of people around the world by providing specialized medical services.

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Craig Hobar, a clinical faculty member, the LEAP Foundation medical mission teams comprised of medical specialists, nurses and general helpers have dedicated their time, expertise and own resources to help bring free medical care to impoverished areas. These areas would not normally have access to the state-of-the-art surgical techniques and specialized care. The LEAP Foundation provides reconstructive surgery to correct cleft lips, cleft palates, congenitally absent ears, and other facial deformities and disfiguring injuries. In addition, volunteer mission teams have included general surgeons, eye surgeons, ocular prosthetics and prosthetic specialists. These individuals enhance the skills of the local medical community and provide medical supplies and equipment to the region.

Dallas Veteran's Affairs Medical Center

The Veterans Administration Medical Center has a 700 bed capacity with 15 designated beds for the plastic surgery service.  A resident is maintained at this institution on a full-time basis.  The V.A. provides a large experience in head and neck ablative and reconstructive surgery as well as the surgery of cutaneous malignancies.  In addition, a broad experience of plastic surgical reconstructive procedures is available.  The V.A. is a resident-responsible service with close supervision by the faculty.

This rotation provides experience in tissue advancement and management, provides a large amount of tertiary care, and a wealth of oncologic and vascular diseases.

Baylor University Medical Center

Baylor University Medical Center, a 978-bed not-for-profit teaching hospital, is a major patient care and research center in the southwest.

There is an average daily census of 20 plastic surgery beds. One senior year resident and one junior year resident are assigned to Baylor at all times as well as general surgery rotators, and occasionally senior medical students taking a plastic surgery elective.

Baylor University Medical Center provides a broad experience in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the breast, microsurgery and elective hand surgery, as well as a broad range of head and neck plastic surgical procedures. The Baylor service is largely a faculty responsible rotation with resident participation based on graded responsibility.

The Baylor University Medical Center Plastic Surgery Clinic meets weekly and is staffed by the junior resident assigned to that rotation. Faculty from Baylor rotate in covering the clinic. The Baylor University Medical Center Emergency Room is covered by the plastic surgery resident assigned to the Baylor rotation and faculty and clinical attendings cover this emergency room 24 hours per day.

Dallas Day Surgery Center

The Dallas Day Surgery Center is located in the Pyramid Building off of the North Central Expressway.

The Plastic Surgery department has instituted a full-time rotation in the private offices for aesthetic surgery and outpatient experience. This is in addition to the cosmetic clinics that provide surgery for the chief resident with faculty supervision. More than 500 cosmetic procedures are carried out annually with the resident being the staff surgeon on more than 150 procedures.
