Stroke Symposium
Saturday, October 22, 2011
Sponsored by UT Southwestern Department of Neurology and Neurotherapeutics and the Office of Continuing Medical Education

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies and:
- Explain the EMS/ED experience of an acute stroke after handoff and what happens next
- Express the role of the EMS/ED staff in the administration of TPA and the importance of good history and the “golden hour of stroke”
- Understand the expanded time window of 4.5 hours—who is and isn’t eligible
- Recognize acute stroke and use the FAST or NIHSS appropriately, while not losing sight of the less-frequent stroke presentations
- Identify the patient appropriately for large-vessel endovascular intervention by going beyond IV TPA
- Examine the results of the recently stopped SAMPRISS trial, lessons learned in neurointervention
- Describe the importance of early surgical interventions in the high-risk ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke population
- Discuss moving the patient to a higher level of care and what are the realistic expectations to convey to the family while at your facility
- Differentiate the telemedicine, from cart to smart phone, and the evolution of the stroke revolution
Each educational objective has been linked to a desirable physician attribute using the ACCME Competencies.
Accreditation
UT Southwestern Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for acute stroke first responders. This audience includes EMT/Paramedic roles in the field and Emergency Physicians or other health care providers that are immediately called to respond to a Code Stroke.
Purpose and Content
The UT Southwestern Stroke Symposium purpose is to review in a concise yet thorough manner the available treatment modalities for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. The audience will gain knowledge in presentation and immediate treatment of acute ischemic stroke, including advancing the 3-hour time window for TPA. Looking past the IV TPA windows, a neurointerventional expert will offer the latest updates on the options for intravascular treatments. Finally, the latest neurosurgical care of the hemorrhagic stroke patient will be explored by a faculty expert. To look into new trends of acute stroke care, the topic of telemedicine will also be reviewed from the perspective of a seasoned telestroke Neurologist. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask a panel of experts from the continuum of acute stroke care questions in the final session.
