Target Audience
Primarily medical oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic and surgical oncology, pulmonary medicine/oncology, general internal medicine, family practice and physician extenders (physician assistants, nurse practitioners), physical therapist, respiratory therapist, and patients/patient advocates.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide the participants with a better understanding of the more recent and evidence-based medicine methods of evaluation and treatment options for patients with chest malignancies. The course will cover the pertinent, key malignancies; how they are evaluated and how treatment is determined; as well as the results of those treatments will also be reviewed in light of the latest therapeutic opportunities. There will be a balanced program of didactics and interactive discussions and case presentations to meet the course objectives.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge and Patient Care) and be able to:
- Explain the effectiveness of screening for lung and esophageal cancer and mesothelioma
- Discuss the role of the current imaging techniques for thoracic malignancies
- Describe the new international staging systems for lung and esophageal cancer
- Identify the evidenced-based best treatment options for thoracic malignancies
- Identify the high risk situations associated with thoracic malignancies and the evidenced-based management options
- Identify the cutting edge and under-investigation screening, evaluation, treatment and treatment response methods
- Integrate the importance of multi-and interdisciplinary nature of thoracic malignancies
