Clipping Rodent Tails for Genotyping

 

 

Rationale:

Tail clipping is an acceptable practice to acquire small amounts of DNA for genotyping.

Applicability:

This policy applies to tail clips performed on mice and rats.

Policy:

Tail clipping may be performed once on mice and rats under 28 days of age without anesthesia.  A maximum of 0.5 cm of the tail may be taken.

Anesthesia is required for tail clipping performed on mice and rats greater than 28 days of age.  A maximum of 0.5 cm of the tail may be taken.

Bleeding must be stopped using a veterinary approved method, such as cautery, styptic powder, and pressure.

Multiple tail clips must be approved by the IACUC.

Exceptions:

Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the IACUC.
