The State of Texas and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas require specific immunizations for enrolled students.  These immunizations protect the health of the student as well as the health of our patients.  Required immunizations must be completed prior to registration.  Specific immunization requirements may be reviewed and vaccine histories submitted to Student Medical Services on the immunization records form provided.

Immunization Updates

Immunizations are to remain updated throughout enrollment.  Documentation of updates may be faxed to Student Health at 214-645-8676.

Immunizations Available

  • Tetanus vaccine and tuberculin skin tests (PPD) are available at no charge to students and postdoctoral trainees.

  • Flu shots are given in the fall at no charge depending on the availability of the vaccine.

  • Hepatitis B, MMR and Varicella immunizations are available through student health.  Cost varies from $50-85 depending on the vaccine.

Travel

Travel immunizations are available through Student Health Services.  Some immunizations do not provide immunity for weeks to months, therefore, it is important to begin planning early.

Check the Center for Disease Control web site at www.cdc.gov for recommended immunizations, medications and travel advice for the area you plan to visit.  Bring the recommendations to your appointment in Student Health.

Malaria, Hepatitis A and Oral Typhoid prescriptions are available through Student Health.  Cost depends on specific insurance prescription benefits.

Other recommended immunizations which are not available in Student Health may be available at the Dallas County Health Department (214-819-2163).

Immunizations Records

Individual immunization records are available to students by calling the office (214-645-8690).

Immune Titers

Immune titers may be required for an off campus rotation or residency program.  Some titers may take 7-14 days for results.  Call 214-645-8690 to make arrangements to have titers drawn.  Immune titers cost $70-$80 each and are not covered by Student Health.  Students are responsible for expenses not covered by insurance.
