UT Southwestern Medical Center provides appropriate and accessible medical care and counseling to faculty, employees, and students who have had exposure to blood and/or body fluids on the UT Southwestern campus.

Exposures to blood or body fluid while rotating at UT Southwestern hospitals or clinics or off-campus facilities are not managed in Student Health.

You should follow these general instructions in the event an exposure occurs:

  1. Needlestick/Sharps Injury or Skin Exposure
If you incur a blood or body fluid exposure incident, immediately rinse the exposed body area thoroughly with soap and water.

  2. Mucous Membrane/Eye Exposure
If eyes, mouth, or nose are involved, flush with copious amounts of water as soon as possible following exposure.

  3. Reporting Procedure for On-Campus Exposures
    1. Inform your supervisor (resident, attending, charge nurse).
    2. Call the 24-hour OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE BEEPER [214- 588-6263]. The Occupational Health nurse will return the page and obtain specifics regarding the exposure.
    3. Depending on the nature of the exposure, the student may be advised to go to the Zale Lipshy Health Referral Center for further evaluation. They can draw appropriate labs, initiate treatment and prophylaxis, and plan follow-up.

  4. Reporting Procedure for Off-Campus Exposures
    1. Thoroughly wash wound as outlined above.
    2. Inform your supervisor (resident, attending, charge nurse).
    3. Follow the procedures recommended by the hospital/clinic where exposure occurred.
