Fume Hood Sticker
|
Laboratory fume hoods are the first defense to minimize chemical exposure to research workers. They are considered the primary means of protection from inhalation of hazardous vapors. It is, therefore, important that all potentially harmful chemical work be conducted inside a properly functioning fume hood. Their installation, operation and maintenance are guided by a variety of governmental and industry organizations such as OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, and FDA to name a few.
UT-Southwestern EH&S requires that each fume hood shall maintain an average face velocity of 80-120 fpm upon measurement. Failure to reach such velocities will most likely result in odors as well as chemical vapor returns in the lab. At this time the fume hood will be tagged and cleared for Physical Plant to start maintenance. If fume hood velocities are acceptable a fume hood sticker will be placed sixteen inches from the bottom of the hood to indicate the required height the sill shall be placed while fume hood is in use.To ensure safety, all fume hoods should be inspected annually. EH&S inspects fume hoods for proper velocity annually. If your area has a new fume hood, if your room was missed, or if you suspect a problem, use the form below to request a visit by EH&S. |
